Christine- there is a diaper service in Ann Arbor , but they were so terrible I can’t really recommend them. They were based in Kalamazoo, so they shipped the diapers a long way each week. But as you’ll learn below, there are some great reasons to cloth diaper that may sway you to take the diapering road less traveled.
Cloth diapers may also require other cloth diaper accessories like liners, covers, and diaper pins. You will also need a water sprayer or some tool that you can use to clean poop out of dirty diapers. You should also purchase a diaper pail liner that you can wash with the diapers.

You will divert waste from the landfill – approximately 4 million disposable diapers are tossed in Canada every single day. When it comes to cloth diapering, remaining patient and staying determined are key as you refine and establish a routine that works best for you. If the smell persists, or if your baby continues to get rashes, repeat this laundry treatment up to three times. Don’t use fabric softeners (this includes many well-known baby detergents, like Dreft).

Some cloth diapers are able to go into the dryer on low settings, but this will cause more wear and tear as time goes on. Using a dryer may also cause damage to waterproof linings, as well as any Velcro, buttons, and snaps. Your baby will go through 8 to 10 diapers in per day. I didn't realize this, even with the service, and called them up when I had trouble fitting my son and they said "well, he's ready for the next size!". I make them, launder them myself and have NEVER had any issues.

There are some cloth diapers and inserts that are made with a microfiber or combination of materials as well. Assuming you start with twenty diapers – that’s only $300! That’s already half the cost of a year of disposables. The cost varies by style, but the most expensive, all-in-ones, average $15 per diaper. The faster cleanup is appealing, and most diaper liners are biodegradable and flushable. I've cloth diapered my second baby since she was 1 week old. Just be sure to spray or swish until the poop is removed. I was tired of the cloth issues, but now they have better diaper covers that don't leak. I think the diaper covers were not as good 17 years ago. Also, are you sure you have access to diaper service where you live?
Sort of off topic, but why is washing a diaper any different than washing underware? I don't care how well you clean your self you are going to have drips of pee and occasional smears of poop. And men don't wipe, they shake, do they really think they got all the pee off befor they zipped back up?

I’m not so very intimidated now, but I admit when I was getting started I was hooked on the idea of getting diapers that were as much like a disposable as possible.
If you have a HE top loader with an agitator, treat it like a regular HE top load. Check your owner’s manual if you’re not sure. You can use any diaper cream with cloth diapers!
