Fonthill, Mercer Museum and Moravian Pottery and Tile Works Wikipedia

mercer house doylestown

Whether it was incorporating ideas about wood paneling that he loved in a 12th-century English manor house or copying elements of Gothic and Byzantine architecture, Mercer brought a little bit of Europe to then-rural Bucks County. Besides being an archaeologist, Mercer was a self styled anthropologist, ethnographer, and perhaps most importantly, collector. When Mercer began to collect artifacts for his museum, his aunt informed him that she had a vast collection of medieval armor. Mercer was delighted, as he wanted the Mercer Museum to contain not only relics of American history, but world history as well. The armor was kept in storage in Boston while Mercer continued to collect.

Mercer MUSEUM

In addition to the tiles Mercer made, you’ll see lots of examples from around the world. There are distinctive Delft blue tiles from the Netherlands, Chinese roof tiles, and Persian tiles. There are even 2000-year-old cuneiform tablets from Babylon incorporated in one of the columns. Mercer believed in his vision and the material he thought was best—concrete was cheap, fireproof, and easily molded. Since a visit here is still one of the top things to do in Doylestown a century later, the risk paid off.

All tickets are non-refundable, non-transferable, and cannot be exchanged for a new date or time. Plan to arrive 10 minutes prior to your tour’s start time and check-in at the Fonthill Castle Welcome Center. Please read about each castle below to ensure you are selecting the correct one before you purchase your ticket.

The massive house is filled with handmade and historic tiles

On days with predicted excessive heat warnings, we will amend our tour routes of Fonthill Castle and aim to avoid areas with the most excessive heat fluctuations. Fonthill Castle tours may not be suitable for younger children under the age of 5, as tours last 60-minutes and may be challenging for the patience of toddlers. The ground floor of the Mercer Museum features a modern wing that is fully accessible and climate-controlled with a changing exhibit gallery, lecture space, museum shop, and restrooms. They are located one mile apart in the heart of Doylestown, PA, and you will need to buy a separate ticket for each. Also interesting in this area is the collection of Moravian tiles embedded in the walls.

The castle contains built-in furniture and is embellished with decorative tiles, made by Mercer at the height of the Arts and Crafts movement. The castle is filled with an extensive collection of ceramics embedded in the concrete of the house, as well as other artifacts from his world travels, including cuneiform tablets discovered in Mesopotamia dating back to over 2300 BCE. The home also contains around 1,000 prints from Mercer's extensive collection, as well as over six thousand books, almost all of which were annotated by Mercer himself. Fonthill is located north of the town center of Doylestown, on the west side of East Court Street, just south of the tile works. Its appearance is loosely based on European medieval castles, and has walls of concrete 2 feet (0.61 m) thick. The exterior is adorned by decorative tiles, the interior is furnished and decorated with Chapman's collections.

Fonthill is just one of three institutions Mercer built in Doylestown

This is quite evident even as you’re pulling up to the museum, as it’s housed in what appears to be a grand European castle. And, while it’s obviously not a European castle, the museum’s founder and designer, Henry Chapman Mercer, certainly intended it to resemble that. To say that the Mercer Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, is unlike any other historical society museum that I’ve visited is a bit of an understatement. In fact, the Mercer Museum might be unlike any museum I’ve ever visited, period.

Merrill Gardens started with one community in Seattle, Washington in 1993 and now has locations across the country offering independent living, assisted living, personal care and memory care. Through innovative programs and a determined commitment to quality, Merrill Gardens is one of the most respected senior living providers in the country. Some of the museum’s most fascinating collections are in the upper levels. One such item is the only surviving Franklin Stove made from Benjamin Franklin’s original design. Make sure you don’t miss it among the dozens of stoves and stove plates that are collected around the museum’s attic.

mercer house doylestown

Walking into the castle itself, you can’t help but notice the grand five-story atrium. Of the museum’s collection of 30,000 pieces, over 60% is on display, with many items still in the same layout that Mercer himself placed them over 80 years ago. Our first guide was fascinated by Mercer and his career, and she added lots of information about his travels and family background to her story. Our second guide was a lover of the architecture and tiles, pointing out many details that we might have otherwise overlooked. If there is an aspect of the site and history that particularly interests you, there is plenty of time for questions throughout the tour.

Each of the museum’s first five floors contains individual rooms, each dedicated to a different industry. Some of them use tools that don’t look too different than what is used today, but there are also some very strange contraptions, such as those used for diving and whaling. Hogwarts feel aside, the Mercer Museum’s collection is one of the more unique in the state, featuring tools that were powered entirely by humans or animals. Interestingly enough, however, these items weren’t collected years after their use, but were often picked up while they were still contemporary machinery. The fact that the Mercer Museum is housed in a six-story concrete castle is strange enough, but the collection inside is so eccentric that the castle-like exterior almost seems fitting. In fact, stepping into the main hall, with machinery literally hanging off the walls and from the rafters, you would be excused from thinking that you had somehow walked into a set for a Harry Potter film.

The Mercers would host lavish dinner parties there, with guests like Groucho Marx, Isadora Duncan and the Von Trapp family. When the family passed away, the mansion fell into despair, until the 1980s when the Heritage Conservancy took over. Today, you can schedule a guided tour of the mansion, or, rent it out for your wedding. The National Historical Landmark and “working history” museum produces handmade tiles and mosaics in the same style of Mercer’s original designs. Guests can even watch artisans throughout the entire tile-making process. Adjacent to Fonthill, the Tile Works still produces the Moravian tiles seen throughout the house.

We particularly liked the decorative tiles at the tops of columns and crisscrossing the ceiling vaults. With 44 rooms, 32 stairwells, 18 fireplaces, and 21 chimneys, this home was built to stand out. Many of those spaces are covered in tiles that Mercer designed and made himself or collected from around the world. Tours at Fonthill are packed with information about the castle and its creative owner and builder, Henry Chapman Mercer. It’s one of our favorite sites in Bucks County, and we have visited the distinctive property several times to soak in all its artistry in different seasons.

From the vaulted ceilings to the polished floors, Mercer designed and oversaw it all himself in an experiment he wasn’t sure would work. He even told people that an architect who cared about his reputation would never make such risky choices. The museum is one of three poured-in-place concrete structures built by Mercer. The others include his home Fonthill and the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, both of which are located one mile from the museum.

These interests were arrayed on the family estate, “Aldie” (BU42), where he constructed an early tile kiln. It offers limited accessibility with steep stairs and narrow, uneven passages throughout the interior of the site. Overall, though, I really enjoyed my visit to the Mercer Museum in Doylestown.

Finished to Mercer’s exact specifications in 1912, Fonthill remains an ornate, architecturally unclassifiable mansion constructed entirely out of poured concrete. The house is featured (by name and description) in Lewis Shiner's 1990 novel Slam, although in the book it has been relocated to Galveston, Texas. But the storage building was made of wood, in the year 1872, the Great Boston Fire destroyed much of the city, and all of Mercer’s armor. Mercer decided to build with concrete after the Great Boston Fire of 1872 destroyed his aunt's prized collection of medieval armor, which had been stored in wooden structures. In June 2011, construction was completed on a new, extensive visitors center at the front of the museum. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Mercer collected pre-industrial hand tools and other implements of the past. He believed that the story of human progress and accomplishments was told by the tools and objects that people used and saw these time-honored crafts slowly disappearing from memory.

A 110-year-old home made of solid concrete presents an unusual visiting environment. Coupled with some low ceilings, a visit on an overcast day could mean a relatively low amount of light inside. Additionally, the first floor has air conditioning, but other spaces only have a fan, so it can get warm on a summer afternoon. Consider the overall conditions and what you’re comfortable with when planning a visit. A video in the visitor’s center explains how Mercer drew inspiration from castles along the Rhine River, and the tour gives even more detail.

The castle serves as an early example of reinforced concrete architecture and features forty-four rooms, over two hundred windows and eighteen fireplaces. Fonthill Castle’s interior features Mercer’s renowned, handcrafted ceramic tiles designed at the height of the Arts and Crafts movement. On the east side of town is the remarkable cluster of buildings that marks the impact of the Mercer family on their hometown. These include the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works (BU41), Henry Chapman Mercer's residence, as well as the house of his brother William, now the headquarters of the Bucks County Heritage Conservancy. His other focus was the restoration of the lost techniques of German craft tile.

Interior

These tiles were made by Mercer at the nearby Moravian Tile Works, and represent some of America’s most sought-after tiles. Unfortunately, because of the small confines of these top two floors, it’s worth noting that there is no elevator access to these floors, and they are not able to accommodate those who can’t use stairs. On the first floor, I especially enjoyed looking at the variety of Cigar Store Indians that were on display.

Fonthill is inspired by the grand manors and castles of Europe

In accordance with Mercer’s Will, Mrs. Swain resided in the house and conducted occasional tours until her death in 1975. It’s worth noting, that the historic nature of the castle prevents there from being heating and air conditioning in the building. While they have large fans that run in the summer, it can be very cold during the wintertime. I visited on a cold day in February and had to wear my coat, hat, and gloves during my entire visit. While the museum’s atrium contains most of the items in the Mercer Museum’s collection, I found the sixth and seventh floors to be even more interesting. Here, narrow rooms twist and turn, almost like a dusty attic in an ancient castle.

All members and guests are encouraged to purchase online tickets prior to their visit. The museum features local and national traveling exhibits, as well as a core museum collection of over 17,000 pre-Industrial tools. DOYLESTOWN, PA — The beloved Mercer Museum Holiday Open House returns to the halls and narrow winding passageways of Henry Mercer's six-story concrete castle on Tuesday, Dec. 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. Moving up the floors, I spent a bit of time looking into each of the small rooms. Nearly every industry that used hand-powered tools was represented in the museum. No matter what industries interest you, you’re sure to find at least a handful of rooms that are quite fascinating.

Upon her death, the Trustees of the Mercer Fonthill Museum determined to operate Fonthill Castle as a historic house museum and contracted with the Bucks County Historical Society to provide professional care and management. "Shame on you!" protesters draped in the traditional Palestinian keffiyeh cloth shouted, running after men in tuxedos and suits and women in long dresses who were holding clutch purses as guests hurried inside for the dinner. With hundreds of protesters rallying against the war in Gaza outside the event and concerns over the conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the perils for journalists covering the conflict, the war hung over this year's event. You might be wondering, what it's really like at the Potter's House Church. According to a preliminary investigation released Friday by the Committee to Protect Journalists, nearly 100 journalists have been killed covering the war in Gaza. Israel has defended its actions, saying it has been targeting militants. Protest organizers said they wanted to bring attention to the high numbers of Palestinian and other Arab journalists killed by Israel's military since the war began in October. Law enforcement, including the Secret Service, have instituted extra street closures and other measures to ensure what Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said would be the "highest levels of safety and security for attendees."

While the area leans Republican, Democrats say they can win over independents and moderate conservatives in the area with a message centered around protecting democracy. Perry was a former chair of the Freedom Caucus, one of the most conservative factions of the Republican Party, with members including Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz and Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Perry was also a key figure in efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Mark Houck, Fitzpatrick’s opponent, was acquitted of criminal charges stemming from an altercation at an abortion clinic.

REGULAR CHURCH SERVICE TIMES

All 17 members of Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation are running for re-election in 2024 and three of those incumbents are facing serious primary challengers. Several others are also watching to see who their opponent will be in the fall. And, in some cases, the outcome of Tuesday’s races could determine which way those seats swing on Election Day. Each service begins with contemporary worship songs to encourage and edify you. We then pray for needs that people have placed on a list in our main sanctuary. Next we take an offering in order to honor the Lord with our giving, as He has so generously given to us.

OUR PASTORS

ONE is a modern church without borders, our capacity is not defined by a building but by our love and leadership. We are a beautifully unique expression within the family of God - diverse in stories, dreams, and purpose with our hearts unified in our passion for Jesus. We create transformational experiences together through intentional, inspirational, and international Biblically sound content, worship music, and growth curriculums. As the Founder of Woman Evolve , Sarah Jakes Roberts redefines what it means to be a modern woman of faith. Her messages spread throughout the world, defying cultural, religious, gender, and socio-economic boundaries.

While it's a far-flung possibility, which party has a majority in Pennsylvania's congressional delegation also could have major implications on the presidential race. If the 2024 White House election is contested or tied, each state’s congressional delegation will have a single vote in deciding the winner. Currently, Democrats have a 9-8 advantage — meaning one general election race in November could make all the difference.

Announcements are briefly made, followed by the preaching of the Word of God before the service closes. After the service we hope you will take a few moments to visit with us, as we would love to get to know you better and answer any questions you may have. Locally we connect through our community groups, in person services, and outreach events. Globally, we come to you through technology providing accessibility, stability, and innovative ministry regardless of geography, background, or time zone.

Meanwhile, the Republican candidates have said that they do not believe the state constitution guarantees the right to an abortion. As attorney general, both would leave the issue for the state legislature to decide. Bishop T.D. Jakes has installed Touré Roberts and Sarah Jakes Roberts as assistant pastors at The Potter’s House Church in Dallas, Texas, a first in the church’s 27-year history. The daughter and son-in-law of Bishop Jakes, Touré and Sarah stepped into their new roles during a special anniversary service at the church on Sunday, July 2. We are a church in action, going into ALL the earth leading people to True life in Christ. Our teams and volunteers have an unlimited opportunity to make a difference through leading and participating in hands-on outreach in their local communities sharing God’s unsparing love while serving humanity.

Poe's Stories The Fall of the House of Usher Summary & Analysis

edgar allan poe house of usher

This fact, together with Poe's technical mastery of the short story medium, helps explain why "The Fall of the House of Usher" has attained classic status, more so than any other of Poe's fiction. In a shocking development, Madeline breaks out of her coffin and enters the room, and Roderick confesses that he buried her alive. Madeline attacks her brother and kills both him and herself in the struggle, and the narrator flees the house. It is a stormy night, and as he leaves he sees the house fall down, collapsing into the lake which reflects the house’s image. Roderick grows more erratic in his behaviour, and the narrator reads to his friend to try to soothe him. The plot of the romance (a fictional title invented by Poe himself, called ‘Mad Trist’) concerns a hero named Ethelred who enters the house of a hermit and slays a dragon.

What Is Your Favorite Mike Flanagan Series?

Like Madeline, Roderick is connected to the mansion, the titular House of Usher. He believes the mansion is sentient and responsible, in part, for his deteriorating mental health and melancholy. Despite this admission, Usher remains in the mansion and composes art containing the Usher mansion or similar haunted mansions. His mental health deteriorates faster as he begins to hear Madeline's attempts to escape the underground vault she was buried in, and he eventually meets his death out of fear in a manner similar to the House of Usher's cracking and sinking.

Episode 5, "The Tell-Tale Heart"

So, class, cue up your streaming devices and let’s take a dive into this list of the chilling Poe references in The Fall of the House of Usher. In addition to these highly credible responses, scholars have also noted various resemblances between Usher and his creator. Usher's physical appearance, featuring "a cadaverousness of complexion; an eye large, liquid, and luminous … lips somewhat thin and very pallid … [and] an inordinate expansion above the regions of the temple," could pass as a portrait of the author. Depending on which biographer one consults, Usher's characterization also recalls other similarities with Poe. Little wonder that in Usher's library his "chief delight … was found in the perusal of… the Vigiliae Mortuorum " (Services for the Dead) in an ancient church manual. One could easily see this story, like many others, as effecting the psychotherapy of art for the grief-haunted, anxiety-ridden writer.

Episode 2: “The Masque of the Red Death”

Poe may have a short story called "The Gold-Bug", but it's his story "William Wilson" that the "Goldbug" episode most resembles. This episode follows Tamerlane Usher (Samantha Sloyan) as she's haunted by an almost identical version of herself, which is exactly what happens to the main character in Poe's story. With this foreboding introduction, we enter the interior through a Gothic portal with the narrator. With him we encounter Roderick Usher, who has changed drastically since last the narrator saw him. His cadaverous appearance, his nervousness, his mood swings, his almost extrahuman sensitivity to touch, sound, taste, smell, and light, along with the narrator’s report that he seems lacking in moral sense, portrays a deeply troubled soul.

There are many overlaps in the design of Prince Prospero's party however, as Poe's tale describes many rooms for debauchery, and of course, it's a masquerade. In Romances like the novels of Hawthorne, conflicts occur among characters within the context of society and are resolved in accordance with society’s rules. Poe’s Gothic tales are brief flashes of chaos that flare up within lonely narrators living at the fringes of society. Poe’s longest work, the 1838 novel Arthur Gordon Pym, described in diary form a series of episodes on a journey to Antarctica.

'The Fall of the House of Usher' Release Date, Trailer, Plot, News - Netflix Tudum

As the narrator reads of the knight's forcible entry into the dwelling, he and Roderick hear cracking and ripping sounds from somewhere in the house. When the dragon's death cries are described, a real shriek is heard, again within the house. As he relates the shield falling from off the wall, a hollow metallic reverberation can be heard throughout the house. At first, the narrator ignores the noises, but Roderick becomes increasingly hysterical. Roderick eventually declares that he has been hearing these sounds for days, and that they are being made by his sister, who was in fact alive when she was entombed. Although it borrows its title directly from one of the Poe's most famous stories, Episode 7 really has a couple of different sources.

The story is narrated by a childhood friend of Roderick Usher, the owner of the Usher mansion. This friend is riding to the house, having been summoned by Roderick Usher, having complained in his letter that he is suffering from some illness and expressing a hope that seeing his old friend will lift his spirits. While Usher is explaining this to the narrator, the narrator sees Madeline, who looks ghostly, walk silently through a far corner of the room. From Usher’s description of her advanced illness, the narrator guesses that this will be the last time he sees her alive. In 1979, Italian state channel RAI loosely adapted the short story, together with other Poe's works, in the series I racconti fantastici di Edgar Allan Poe.[33] It was directed by Daniele D'Anza, with Roderick Usher played by Philippe Leroy; music was composed by pop band Pooh. A storm begins, and Roderick comes to the narrator's bedroom (which is situated directly above the house's vault) in an almost hysterical state.

Roderick Usher was tottering on the brink of mental collapse just as the ancestral House of Usher tottered on the brink of physical collapse, as though man and mansion shared a common spirit and common state. From both, an eerie environmental gloom exuded, tainting all within their sphere and rendering everything cheerless, comfortless, and careworn. Sensing and shrinking from his inevitable fall into madness, Roderick Usher summons an old schoolmate to stay with him and divert him from his disturbing phantasms and disconsolate meditations. Upon the wary guest’s arrival, Usher apprises him of the character of his mysterious, mentally-induced malady of soul and body—as well as with the intelligence that his twin sister, the Lady Madeline, resides also within the crumbling walls succumbing to diseases of her own. These are his terrors, and yet he embraces them as he obsessively paints images of crypts and writes dirges of shattered joys and haunted palaces. There can hardly be a starker image of the self-propagating distress of the subconscious.

Usher himself is suffering from a “mentaldisorder,” which is “a constitutional and . One wonders, until one recallsthat, in the third paragraph of this story, even before Roderick has been seenfor the first time, the narrator mentions that the ancient “stem” of the Usherfamily never “put forth . So lain.” In other words,Roderick and Madeline Usher are the products and inheritors of an incestuousfamily lineage—one that has remained predominantly patrilineal, so that thename of the family always remained Usher. The narrator and Roderick place her in a tomb despite her flushed, lively appearance. In the tale's conclusion, Madeline escapes from the tomb and returns to Roderick, scaring him to death.

Usher says that Madeline’s doctor suggested this, and the narrator believes it reasonable. Usher tells him that they were twins and always shared an uncanny sensibility. They replace the coffin’s lid, and the narrator shudders at Madeline’s flushed face and slight smile, as if she could be alive. The story opens with the narrator riding alone on a cloudy autumn day to theHouse of Usher.

In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” he deliberately subverts convention by rejecting the typical practices of preaching or moralizing and instead focusing on affect and unity of atmosphere. Contemporary readers and critics interpreted the story as a somewhat sensationalized account of Poe’s supposed madness. (As a recluse, Poe often invited such accusations.) Later scholarship pursued alternative interpretations. Some scholars speculated that Poe may have attached special importance to the fact that Roderick and Madeline are twins, noting that Poe previously investigated the phenomenon of the double in “Morella” (1835) and “William Wilson” (1839). Other scholars pointed to the work as an embodiment of Poe’s doctrine of l’art pour l’art (“art for art’s sake”), which held that art needs no moral, political, or didactic justification.

If you have a tiny yard, you may not have room for a pond, but you can still add a water feature such as a birdbath or tabletop fountain. Allow enough room for plants to reach their mature size and use dwarf varieties for smaller areas. Even a small urban yard can be transformed into an inviting space where you can maximize enjoyment of your time outdoors. Here are some basic backyard design principles, along with design ideas to get you started.

An empty or neglected flower bed attracts attention for all the wrong reasons; keep your flowers perky and thriving by selecting outdoor plants meant for your climate. Dry weather doesn’t have to annihilate your garden and lawn every year. Certain climates have windows of time when there’s no rain and the moisture in the soil dries up.

The Best Low Voltage Landscape Lighting

When building your outdoor fireplace, try to place it in a direction that blocks prevailing wind, so it retains more heat for those sitting in front of it. Stone Fireplace

A soft glow as opposed to a brilliant white, will also add a cozy, relaxing ambiance to your outdoor space — especially once the sun goes down. It’s also a good idea to have a designated seating or entertaining area so that all your patio furniture is kept in one place — rather than spread out. This sense of order will not only create an organized space, but feel more spacious, and easier to navigate around. Whether you have a spacious or compact yard, one common mistake is to not consider functionality, or overcrowd the space. Most people tend to spread everything around such as plant pots, garden accessories or seating areas, without much thought behind it. This can often clutter up the space, making it feel cramped, and not making use of the full potential of your backyard space.

Decorate a back porch or patio with hanging baskets filled with colorful annuals. The backyard is where most outdoor home activities happen, whether it’s play time for kids, a family barbecue, or quiet time with a good book. Unlike traditional landscapes of the past, the backyard has become an outdoor space that’s an extension of the home. This screened-in backyard shed stands out thanks to stunning natural wood, and provides plenty of room for a relaxing seating area. A large table outside also gives the option of eating outdoors on the stone patio.

Outdoor dining becomes a heck of a lot easier when you create the outdoor kitchen of your dreams. Your outdoor kitchen may include a barbecue grill with cooking elements, pizza oven, blender, outdoor fridge, or outdoor sink. Pretty much anything you keep in your regular kitchen can be added to your outdoor kitchen–just make sure you have access to power outlets. With harmful UV rays, enjoying the outdoors properly means being responsible and seeking shade when you’re able.

Wouldn’t it be great to have your own chicken coop in the backyard? Fresh eggs as often as you like, and the potential to start a small urban farm. Chicken coops and their feathered inhabitants add a lot of entertainment to a backyard, too. This idea is reserved for large backyard landscaping, so your chickens get enough room to run around. Build your own, or buy this enormous chicken coop, available at Etsy.

If droughts occur in your area, avoid the heartache of investing in water-loving plants and switch to drought tolerant greenery. Depending on your local climate, adding plants like lavender, catmint, California poppy, yarrow, and artemisia keeps your outdoor space colorful and thriving. Do it well, and this outdoor pond landscaping idea becomes a stress-free space that exudes feelings of calm. Fill it with fish and pond plants, such as horsetail, taro, or water lilies. After you establish the ecosystem, maintenance is minimal, and you can spend more time enjoying the pond than working on it.

The Fall of the House of Usher Summary and Study Guide

edgar allan poe house of usher

Just as the hero kills the dragon, the sound of a shieldfalling—a sound which occurs in the story—disturbs both the narrator andRoderick. Roderick’sfollowing ravings reveal that he fears that he buried Madeline alive. On a stormy autumn (with an implied pun on the word fall?) evening, a traveler—an outsider, like the reader—rides up to the Usher mansion. This traveler, also the first-person narrator and boyhood friend of Roderick Usher, the owner of the house, has arrived in response to a summons from Usher. Very soon we understand that, whatever else it may mean, the house is a metaphor for the Usher family itself and that if the house is seriously flawed, so are its occupants. Within a few hours of the narrator’s arrival, Roderick begins to share some of his theories about his family.

Episode 4: “The Black Cat”

In the first, the narrator has a phobia of being buried alive (taphophobia) but recounts the tale of a woman who endures exactly that, then is resurrected. In the second, a man watches his wife deteriorate and die before ultimately finding no trace of her in her tomb. Both share parallels with Roderick and Madeline's mother, Eliza (Annabeth Gish), who climbs out of her fresh grave for a final act of vengeance.

‘How Disney Built America’: Unpacking the Magic of Every Episode in History Docuseries

The ancient objects and decorations—armor, tapestries, carvings, paintings—make the narrator uneasy, and he begins to have strange trepidations. He passes Usher’s family physician, who does not speak to him, and the valet conveys the narrator to Usher’s studio. The narrator then runs from the house, and, as he does, he notices a flash of moonlight behind him. He turns back in time to see the Moon shining through the suddenly widened crack in the house. As he watches, the House of Usher splits in two and the fragments sink away into the lake.

The House of Usher & the House of Poe: Celebrating 175 Years of Horror

The word “detective” did not exist in English at the time that Poe was writing, but the genre has become a fundamental mode of twentieth-century literature and film. Dupin and his techniques of psychological inquiry have informed countless sleuths, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe. The title comes from Poe’s 1839 short story of the same name — but each of the eight episodes is jam-packed with adaptations and references to stories and poems from Poe’s entire body of work. It’s clear that the minds behind The Fall of the House of Usher brushed up on 19th-century literature. The series brings to Poe’s work a modern twist, as the feuding members of the Usher family get killed off one by one.

Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher

A flash of light dazes him, and he hears a ghastly scream as the house crumbles into the black waters of the tarn. A television adaptation was produced by ATV for the ITV network in 1966 for the horror anthology series Mystery and Imagination. In the Roger Corman film from 1960, released in the United States as House of Usher, Vincent Price starred as Roderick Usher, Myrna Fahey as Madeline and Mark Damon as Philip Winthrop, Madeline's fiancé. The film was Corman's first in a series of eight films inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe.

The death of Frederick Usher (Henry Thomas), which is caused by a pendulous piece of building material swinging slowly down to cut him open, is almost straight out of Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum". But Frederick's removal of his wife's teeth, one of the most disturbing and WTF moments of the entire show, appears to have been loosely inspired by a story called "Berenice". That grim tale sees a man obsessing over cousin's teeth and eventually removing them after she dies. Because of this multiplicity of meanings, ranging from high entertainment to powerful psychological insight, "The Fall of the House of Usher" can satisfy an unusually wide spectrum of responses.

Plot

Poe’s writing helped elevate the genre from a position of critical neglect to an art form. “The Fall of the House of Usher” stands as one of Poe’s most popular and critically examined stories. Inshort, the narrator assists his host in entombing the body temporarily in,first, a coffin with its lid screwed down, and then in a vault behind a massiveiron door of profound weight.

While watching his friend’s condition deteriorate, the narratorfeels himself slip into madness as well. Live burial and people rising from their graves is a theme in Poe's short stories. Although there isn't one particular story that closely resembles the plot of "A Midnight Dreary" — it's taken from the opening lines of "The Raven" and that's a whole other story that bookends the Netflix series — "The Premature Burial" and "Morella" both spring to mind.

From his arrival, the narrator notes the family's isolationist tendencies, as well as the cryptic and special connection between Madeline and Roderick, the final living members of the Usher family. Throughout the tale and her varying states of consciousness, Madeline completely ignores the narrator's presence. After Roderick Usher claims that Madeline has died, the narrator helps Usher entomb Madeline in an underground vault despite noticing Madeline's flushed, lifelike appearance. Throughout his 40 tormented years of life, Edgar Allan Poe was widely hailed as a genius for the black brilliance of his art. He is the undisputed master of the macabre and the father of the supernatural and psychological thriller. Conjured over a century ago, Poe’s phantasmagorias remain unparalleled to this day in their rich, velvety, cerebral, and suffocating horror.

The narrator feels pity when he sees how pale and ill Usher has become, describing him as “ghastly” (8). Usher is suffering from a nervous condition and is perpetually afraid that something terrible will happen. The narrator learns that Usher has lived in his small set of rooms for years, never venturing into the other wings of the house. Usher believes the decrepit state of the house is negatively affecting his mental and physical state. At the house, a servant takes the narrator’s horse, and a silent valet, or butler, escorts him through dark passages into a dreary hall.

In 1950, a British film version of The Fall of the House of Usher was produced starring Gwen Watford, Kay Tendeter and Irving Steen. A second silent film version, also released in 1928, was directed by James Sibley Watson and Melville Webber. La Chute de la maison Usher is a 1928 silent French horror film directed by Jean Epstein starring Marguerite Gance, Jean Debucourt, and Charles Lamy.

When Roderick speaks, he states that his illness is hereditary and withoutcure, which causes him to have highly reactive senses. He admits that he is superstitious aboutthe house, and that its continual gloom has broken him down. Usher states thathe and his sister, Madeline, are the last of the line of Usher, and thatMadeline is sick with a disease the doctors cannot diagnose. The narrator is impressed with Roderick's paintings and attempts to cheer him by reading with him and listening to his improvised musical compositions on the guitar.

“You could say she’s the executor of fate or the executor of karma,” said Gugino. ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ can also be analysed as a deeply telling autobiographical portrait, in which Roderick Usher represents, or reflects, Poe himself. After all, Roderick Usher is a poet and artist, well-read (witness the assortment of books which he and the narrator read together), sensitive and indeed overly sensitive (to every sound, taste, sight, touch, and so on).

With a moan, she falls on her brother, and, by the time they hit the floor, both Roderick and Madeline are dead. Outside, he looks back just in time to see the house split in two and collapse. When he looks back at the house, a crack in its roof has widened to split the house open.

If you stick to the areas where you're allowed to be as a passenger, you don't have to worry about falling overboard on a cruise. Officers will attempt to pinpoint when and where the incident happened, allowing the search to cover a particular radius where the individual is predicted to be. The search will be called off after either the passenger is found or the ship is cleared by the coast guard to continue its voyage.

"We are beyond grateful that this case ended with a positive outcome," said Lt. Seth Gross, a Coast Guard Sector New Orleans search-and-rescue mission coordinator. Of the 212 listed as overboard between 2009 and 2019, only 48 people were rescued. The captain also will notify other ships in the area who are then obligated to help search. "I'll stress that people don't just fall over the side," said Brian Salerno, senior vice president of global maritime policy at Cruise Lines International Association, the industry's leading trade group.

Grimes had only been aboard the Carnival Valor for a day before his sister reported him missing. The two were last seen together at a restaurant where Grimes had won an air guitar contest before going to the bathroom. There are also the risks from overexposure, hypothermia, dehydration, and predators. Not very many as compared to the number of passengers over time.

"All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the team member's family at this difficult time," the cruise line said in a statement. The Coast Guard confirmed to The Post it is still conducting a search and rescue operation in the waters off Cuba. “The early morning was definitely somber as so many people came out of their cabins to stare at the sea, hoping to be able to aid in finding the person,” said Amy Phelps Fouse, a passenger on the ship. A cruise turned into a nightmare for people aboard Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas when a young man jumped overboard shortly after 4 a.m. The safest cruise lines were able to rescue only 40 percent of overboard passengers, and most save far fewer, he said.

Daniel Miranda, another passenger, told the station that cruise officials said that they had “verified through the cameras” that a woman had fallen into the water. A photo he took, broadcast by the station, also showed that the area of the ship where the woman fell had been cordoned off with blue tape. One passenger told a California news station, KABC-TV, that he heard someone say, “Man overboard, man overboard port side” on the ship’s speakers.
